47 Billion Cups of Tea – and No End in Sight
Why tea continues to thrive and how consumption in Germany compares internationally
Tea was once again one of Germany’s most popular beverages in 2025. Average per-capita consumption stands at around 67.2 litres per year, encompassing not only classic black and green teas but also herbal and fruit infusions. This amounts to an estimated 47 billion cups of tea consumed across the country. Preferences are particularly pronounced in the herbal and fruit segment: at 40.1 litres per person, these varieties account for the larger share, while black and green tea together make up 27.1 litres per capita. Despite a slight year-on-year decline of around 1.5 per cent, tea consumption in Germany thus remains stable at a consistently high level.
In a global context, Germany occupies a solid middle position. Worldwide, approximately 31 million tonnes of tea are consumed each year, equivalent to around 2.3 billion cups a day. In absolute terms, countries with large populations and deeply rooted tea cultures dominate consumption: China leads with roughly 14 million tonnes annually, followed by India at around 6 million tonnes. Countries such as Kenya also play a significant role in the global tea market. On a per-capita basis, however, nations like Turkey and the United Kingdom rank among the leading tea drinkers.
Overall, the comparison shows that Germany’s per-capita consumption lies close to the global average, yet stands out for its strong demand for herbal and fruit teas. Tea is firmly embedded in everyday life in Germany – enjoyed as a pleasure drink, embraced as a comforting ritual, and increasingly chosen as a conscious alternative to coffee.
